The Statistical Information System internship is for at least two months with an opportunity for extension up to six months, depending on the needs of the division.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
The ESCAP Statistics Division is guided by the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics and the Principles Governing International Statistical Activities, and by the work programme and the membership of ESCAP. Our mandates arise from a number of General Assembly, ECOSOC and ESCAP resolutions.
The core areas of the Division's work include implementing programmes for capacity building in statistics; collecting and analysing data on the region; and publishing statistical and analytical publications. We work closely with the ESCAP Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific and organizations that are part of national statistics systems in the region (national statistical offices are our main counterparts); the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs; other United Nations entities; and with a large number of regional and international organizations
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following.
The incumbent will participate in one or more activities of the secretariat related to the development and maintenance of statistical databases to support the development of analytical products: SDG progress reports, data visualizations, and related knowledge products. .
Within delegated authority, the duties of the incumbent may include the following:
1. Assist in the development of components to improve the processing of data through the ESCAP Statistical Information System: automation of data compilation (through SDMX, JSON and related web services technologies);
2. Assist in the compilation of data to support the key messages published by ESCAP major publications: development and adaptation of calculation scripts (using R, SQL)
3. Participate in the substantive servicing of expert group meetings, seminars and training workshops.
4. Perform other tasks as required.
Depending on the tasks performed, after the assignment the incumbent will be able to:
1. Gain practical knowledge in R development language, an open source software widely used in statistical work.
2. Gain practical knowledge in SDMX (XML-based technology) and other data exchange standards.
3. Gain a practical understanding of statistics in support of economic and social development.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.
- are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme;
- shall be computer literate in standard software applications;
- have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
- have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
